The Ferrymead Heritage Park is the home of the Diesel Traction Group and the Canterbury Railway Society. The group is an operator within the park and have run charter travel services across KiwiRail lines in the South Island. The Diesel Traction Group and Canterbury Railway Society collections include several restored heritage locomotives, including electric, steam and diesel variants that are operated regularly for the general public.
The park was originally formed in the 1960s with a common interest in forming a museum of scientific and industrial history, alongside the Canterbury Branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society.
